The cloud forest coral snake is a small, venomous snake that lives in the mountains of southern Mexico. It is a member of the Elapidae family, the group that includes cobras and coral snakes. It is found in pine-oak forests high above sea level, where it hunts at night and at dusk.1

Its preferred home is pine-oak forest, at heights of 1,585 to 2,256 metres (5,200 to 7,402 feet). It lives on the ground, rather than in trees or water.1

The black rings are not grouped in threes.1
Males have 23 to 24 black rings, and females have 26 to 28.1
Its red rings have no black-tipped scales.1
It is small for its genus. The longest measured specimen was 55.7 cm long, including the tail.1
