The Santander coral snake is a venomous snake that lives only in central Colombia, in the Andes mountains. It is medium-sized for its group, and its bold red, white and black rings are a warning to look out for. It is also found in towns and coffee plantations as well as forest.1

Central Colombia, in the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes, in the departments of Boyacá, Cundinamarca and Santander1

Its preferred habitat is forest, at heights of 1,018–1,737 m (3,340–5,699 ft). It has also been found in disturbed places such as coffee plantations and towns.1

Red, white (or yellow) and black rings run around the body.1
The black rings come in groups of three (triads). The middle black ring of each group is 2–3 times wider than the outer ones.1
The white rings are irregular and spotted with black.1
Adults usually measure 45–55 cm in total length, including the tail.1
