The ornate coral snake is a venomous snake that lives in the forests of northwestern South America. It is known for its bright red, black and white rings. It is medium-sized for its group of snakes and spends much of its time on the ground, mostly at night.1

It prefers forest at elevations of 100–750 metres (330–2,460 ft). It is terrestrial and semi-fossorial, which means it lives on the ground and partly underground.1
