Steindachner's coral snake is a venomous snake that lives in the forests of northwestern South America. It has bold red, white and black rings, which is typical of the coral snakes of the Americas. Its bite is the reason to know it on sight.1

It prefers forest at elevations of 500 to 2,000 metres (1,600 to 6,600 feet). It is terrestrial, meaning it lives on the ground, and fossorial, meaning it is adapted to burrowing.1
