Chimaera monstrosa
The nickname 'rabbit fish' comes from its large head, which looks rabbit-like with its big eyes, nostrils and tooth plates.1

The rabbit fish is a deep-sea fish with a big head and a long, tapering body. It lives in the north-east Atlantic and the Mediterranean, mostly on muddy seabeds far below the surface. Its spiny back fin can sting, so it is worth knowing what it looks like.1

It lives in deep water on the continental slope, usually between 50 and 1,000 metres down, and is most common at 300 to 500 metres. It prefers seabeds of mud or soft material. In summer, adults move closer to shore, to depths as shallow as 100 metres, to lay eggs.1

  • Large head with a short snout and an overhanging mouth1
  • Tapering body ending in a whip-like tail1
  • Tall, triangular top fin, with its spine running past the tip of the fin1
  • Silver-green colour with brown spots and white stripes on the head1

Its close relatives have an anal fin that joins the tail fin. In the rabbit fish, the anal fin is clearly separated from its lancet-shaped tail fin.1

The spine can cause painful stings.1

If its spines stab you

  • If its spines stab you: stay calm, keep still, call your emergency number (112, 000, 911) or get to a hospital fast. Remember what it looked like, a photo helps.
