The emerald horned pit viper is a pit viper, a type of snake with heat-sensing pits between its eyes and nostrils. It lives only in the mountains of eastern Mexico, where its bright green body helps it blend into the forest. It is special because it is found nowhere else in the world.1

It lives in montane cloud forest, humid pine-oak woodland and pine forest with secondary vegetation (plant growth that has regrown after earlier disturbance). It is mostly terrestrial, so it spends more time on the ground than in trees.1

  • Body is emerald or olive green, though it can sometimes be brown or tan.1
  • Has 37 to 46 dark blotches on the back, outlined in black, which join to form a wavy dark stripe along the middle of the back.1
  • Has a distinctive white, cream or pale yellow triangular marking on the side of the head.1
  • Has a horn-like scale above each eye that does not touch the eye.1
  • Has no rattle on its tail. Juveniles are grey in colour.1
