The Maricopa harvester ant is a desert ant that builds nests with sand, gravel and rock. It lives mainly in Arizona and nearby US and Mexican states. Its venom is believed to be among the most toxic of any insect, so it is important to know it when you see it.1

Its venom contains amino acids, peptides, proteins, alkaloids, terpenes and other compounds. Its most distinctive part is an alkaloid poison, which also releases an alarm pheromone that alerts nearby ants, so several may sting at once. In humans, a sting causes intense pain.1

The venom is believed to be the most toxic insect venom in the world. In mice, the LD50 (the dose that kills half the animals tested) is 0.12 mg/kg, which is less than one-twentieth as strong as the honey bee. A sting causes intense pain that can last from four to eight hours.1

Its alarm pheromone alerts other ants in the area, so several ants may sting at the same time.1
