The monkey slug is the larva, or caterpillar, of the hag moth. It is covered in tufts of hair on its body, and it is a common sight on the leaves of trees and shrubs in orchards. The hairs can cause irritation to people.1

  • Nine pairs of curly projections, called tubercles, run along the flattened body.1
  • Each projection is densely covered in hairs.1
  • The third, fifth and seventh projections are often longer than the others.1
  • The larva is 1.5 to 2.5 cm long.1
  • It is solitary, so it is usually found alone.1
