The acuminate bush viper is a tree-dwelling snake with long, sharp-pointed scales along its back. It is venomous, like all vipers, and lives in the forests of western Uganda. It is a close relative of the bush viper Atheris hispida.1

The two can be told apart by counts of scales: A. acuminata has five interorbitals (scales between the eyes) and six supralabials (scales along the upper lip), while A. hispida has 6 to 10 interorbitals and 7 to 10 supralabials. Its rostral shield has two suprarostrals, where A. hispida has three.1
