Cómo reconocerlo

  • Red, white and black rings run around the whole body.1
  • The black rings come in groups of three, called triads. There are 5 to 9 triads on the body.1
  • The middle black ring of each triad is wider than the black rings on either side of it.1
  • The white rings are narrow, about three scales wide, and the scales have black tips.1
  • Adults usually measure 70 to 90 cm, including the tail.1

This snake has a powerful venom. The estimated lethal dose for an adult human is 8 to 10 mg (dry weight). In milking studies, the average venom yield was 8 mg, but the maximum yield was 80 mg, which is eight to ten times the estimated lethal dose.1

Mantente a salvo

Datos

1

The maximum venom yield recorded from a milked snake was 80 mg, which is eight to ten times the estimated lethal dose for an adult human.1

2

At 1.24 m, the largest recorded specimen is about as long as a small child is tall. This is large for the genus Micrurus.1

3

Males and females look alike in their scale counts. This is unusual for the genus, where the sexes often differ.1
