Cómo reconocerlo

  • Its body is spotted with yellow or yellow-green scales.1
  • Most of the upper body has yellow or brownish scales with black bases, though some specimens have all-black scales on the back.1
  • The head and neck are mostly black.1
  • The belly scales are black-based and bright yellow.1
  • It usually reaches no more than 1.6 m in total length, including the tail.1

Se confunde a menudo con: The mulga snake or king brown (Pseudechis australis) is larger and more widespread, and the two can live in the same areas of central Western Australia. The mulga snake has reddish-brown belly scales with cream edges, while the spotted mulga snake has bright yellow belly scales with black bases. The spotted mulga snake also has fewer belly scales. The black snake of eastern Australia (Pseudechis porphyriacus) has pink or red belly scales.1

Poder del veneno

Mordeduras

Its venom contains systemic myotoxins, which are toxins that spread through the whole body and act on muscle. The species can produce a very large amount of venom.1

The genus Pseudechis is described as dangerously venomous. The spotted mulga snake can produce a very large amount of venom.1

When threatened, it raises its head and shows its hood in a cobra-like display to intimidate an opponent.1

Si muerde

  • Treatment for envenomation is the same as for the mulga snake, using black snake antivenom.1

Mantente a salvo
