The green weaver ant is a tree-dwelling ant that builds its nests by stitching leaves together with silk. It lives in the warm, wet forests of tropical Asia and northern Australia. It has a painful bite and can spray irritant chemicals, so it is best watched from a distance.1

Hasiera
It is arboreal, so it lives in the leaves of trees in humid tropical regions. Colonies can have several nests in one tree or spread across neighbouring trees. People may meet it in fruit and nut trees, and on crops such as coconut, cocoa, coffee and citrus.1

Zer jaten du?
It feeds on insects and other invertebrates, mainly beetles, flies and hymenopterans. It also tends aphids and scale insects to feed on the honeydew they produce.1

Zer egiten du bere pozoiak?

The ant does not sting. Its bite is painful, and it can also secrete irritant chemicals from its abdomen.1

Zein arriskutsua da pertsonentzat?

Arriskua pertsonentzat: ArinaErle-ziztada bat bezala edo gutxiago. Ia kaltegabea pertsonentzat.

The ants are aggressive towards people. In Sri Lanka, protecting coffee crops with these ants was abandoned because picking the crop proved too painful.1

Zer egiten du beldurtzen denean?

When threatened, workers gather in local clusters against intruders, and if the threat continues, the colony mobilises in larger numbers.1

Zipriztintzen bazaitu

  • Garbitu eta hoztu ziztadak.
  • Pertsonak arnasa hartzeko zailtasunak baditu, aurpegia edo eztarria hanpatuta baditu, edo zorabiatzen ari dela sentitzen badu, larrialdi alergikoa da: deitu zure larrialdi-zenbakira.

Egon seguru

  • Ez ukitu, ez harrapatu eta ez zirikatu inoiz animalia basati bat, txikia izan arren, eta lo edo hilda dagoela badirudi ere.
  • Utzi tartea. Bat aurkitzen baduzu, egon lasai, egin atzera poliki eta utzi bere bidetik joaten.
  • Batek zipriztintzen bazaitu: egon lasai, egon geldi, deitu zure larrialdi-zenbakira (112, 000, 911) edo joan ospitalera azkar. Gogoratu nolakoa zen, argazki batek laguntzen du.

Ez dabil zure atzetik. Pozoia janaria harrapatzeko edo bere burua babesteko erabiltzen du, eta askoz nahiago du ezkutatu. Seguru egoteari buruz gehiago

Datuak

1

Weaver ants build leaf nests by teamwork. Workers pull leaf edges together, and others use larvae like living shuttles to make silk that binds the leaves.1

2

A single colony can reach up to half a million individuals, and one colony was recorded occupying 151 nests across 12 trees.1

3

Some jumping spiders mimic these ants with chemical scents to enter their nests and eat the larvae.1

4

In Thailand and the Philippines, the larvae and pupae are eaten, and are said to taste creamy, sour and lemony.1

5

The oldest written record of using these ants for pest control is from China in 304 CE, where they protected citrus.1

6

In Java, Indonesia, the larvae and pupae, called kroto, are harvested as food for songbirds and as fishing bait.1

Mito-hauslea

Mitoa: Green weaver ants sting like bees or wasps.

Egia: They do not sting. Their bite can be painful, and they can spray irritant chemicals from the abdomen.1
