Its venom causes Irukandji syndrome, which can bring sweating, anxiety, muscle spasms, severe high blood pressure and, later, low blood pressure and heart failure. The sting itself causes little local reaction, and the symptoms do not appear straight away. They get worse as time goes on.1

Only the Irukandji jellyfish and the box jelly are known to cause Irukandji syndrome, and the box jelly is far more venomous. Stings are still painful and dangerous even though they are less fatal than box jelly stings.1

Eziokwu
It has been known to cause Irukandji syndrome, which is why it is treated as a serious hazard in the waters where it lives.1
Its venom affects the heart, and scientists have only recently worked out how.1
It swims more like a fish than a jellyfish, although scientists do not yet know why.1
Blooms of Irukandji jellyfish, including this species, are becoming more common because of human activity such as fishing and pollution.1
Blooms can make it hard for ships to pass and make the water dangerous for divers.1
