Eziokwu
Scientists think the population has declined by at least 70%, and no specimens were found in 2007 during surveys that had recorded them in 1998.1
It has been documented hybridising with the snake Aipysurus laevis, and a 2006 study found the two species are closely related.1
This snake gives birth to live young instead of laying eggs.1
It usually lives in shallow water, from the surface down to about 12 metres, though it has occasionally been recorded at depths of up to 30 metres.1
