The red-legged purseweb spider is a large, strong-looking spider that lives in the southern and eastern United States. It builds a silk tunnel against a tree or other surface and waits inside for prey to land on it. Its long life, up to 7 years, is unusual for a spider.1

It catches prey by funnelling it into a narrow silk tunnel, where it is hard to escape. The spider waits inside for prey to land or climb on the tunnel wall, then bites through the silk and pulls the prey in.1
