Andaman cobra

Naja sagittifera
名前について： The name comes from the Andaman Islands, where the snake lives. Its scientific name, sagittifera, is Latin for 'arrow-bearing'.1

The Andaman cobra is a large, heavy-bodied snake found only on the Andaman and Little Andaman Islands of India. It has a very potent venom. It can defend itself by spitting venom, although this is rare and it aims poorly.1

見分け方

  • Adults come in three colour forms: glossy black, light brown or cream, and grey.1
  • Most adults have an indistinct black 'monocle' mark on the hood, which is a single ring-like mark.1
  • Juveniles are glossy black with narrow white cross-bars on the body and tail, which look like 'A' shapes from the side.1
  • Juveniles have a distinct white monocle mark with a black centre, which turns black as the snake ages.1
  • When threatened, it expands its neck to form a hood.1

The venom is very potent. If it is spat into the eye and not treated, it can cause intense pain and blindness. Bites from its close relative, the monocled cobra, can cause a painful bite with swelling, and in some cases tissue death, and flaccid paralysis, a weakening of the muscles.1
