The Chaco widow is a small black spider with red markings on its belly. It lives in parts of South America and Panama, including farmland, and it can also be found indoors. It belongs to the widow spider group, which is known for venom.1

  • About 12 mm (1.2 cm) long, and mainly black.1
  • Large red markings on the upper side of the abdomen, shown by both males and females.1
  • A red, square-like ring under the abdomen.1
  • The egg-sac is made of fragile silk with pompom-like tufts.1

It is not aggressive, like most species of Latrodectus. It is most active from December to March, which is summer in the Southern Hemisphere.1
