The Mandalay spitting cobra is a heavy-bodied cobra that lives only in the dry central part of Myanmar. Like other spitting cobras, it can squirt venom at a threat from a distance, so it is important to know what it looks like and keep well away from it.1

It lives in the dry central Dry Zone of Myanmar, where rainfall is under 1,000 mm a year. Specimens have been collected in dry forests and dry acacia habitat, and the land is widely used for farming.1

It mainly eats toads and frogs, and will also take other snakes, small mammals and occasionally fish. It is mostly active at dusk or at night.1

Yellowish-brown to dull brown body with darker brownish mottling1
Pale belly with some dark speckling1
Often dark under the chin and throat, then a paler area, then 2 or 3 dark bands across the underside of the hood1
Usually no obvious markings on the top of the hood, though some juveniles may have a spectacle-shaped mark1

Nothing is known about the venom of this particular species. As a spitting cobra, its venom is likely to be cytotoxic, meaning it damages body cells, and post-synaptic neurotoxic, meaning it attacks the nerves at the junction where they meet muscle.1

It is alert and defensive, and very little provocation is needed to make it spit. When threatened it may also charge forward, hiss loudly and try to bite.1
