名前について： The scientific name Micruroides euryxanthus refers to the genus Micruroides, which contains only this one species. The common name comes from its red, black and white or yellow banding, which is typical of coral snakes.1

The Sonoran coral snake is a small, brightly banded venomous snake. It lives in dry deserts and scrubland in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Its venom is extremely potent, but no deaths from its bite have been reported.1

  • Broad, alternating rings of red and black, separated by narrower rings of white or yellow.1
  • The head is black.1
  • The first ring behind the head is red.1
  • Usually has only 2 black rings on the tail.1
  • Adults are 28 to 61 cm long, tail included.1

Its venom is neurotoxic, which means it attacks the nerves, and it is extremely potent. The estimated lethal dose for an adult human is 6 to 8 mg. In laboratory milking, the average venom yield was 0.12 mg (dry weight), with a maximum of 6 mg.1

When startled or threatened, it hides its head under its body, raises its tail and curls it tightly. It can also forcibly release gas from its cloaca with a loud noise, a behaviour known as cloacal popping, which smells very unpleasant.1
