Bites are common in some parts of Africa. It is the third most common cause of serious snakebites in South Africa, after the Mozambique spitting cobra and the puff adder. Snake handlers are often bitten, because the snake can bite while being held by its neck. No deaths have been recorded, but the bite is serious.1
