The Central American coral snake is a highly venomous snake with bold red, yellow and black rings. It lives in forests from southern Mexico through Central America to north-western Colombia. It is mostly active at night and usually avoids people, but it can bite if it is handled or pinned.1

It lives mainly on the ground in lowland rain forest, dry forest and thorn forest, and in lower montane forests up to about 1,300 m. It often hides in burrows, leaf litter and under logs.1
