The yellow-spotted monitor is a large, fast lizard that lives in northern and western Australia and southern New Guinea. It is one of Australia's biggest lizards, and it plays an important part in its ecosystem as a predator. It can give a painful bite if it feels threatened.1

It is mostly ground dwelling and digs large burrows or takes over existing ones, where it spends much of its time. It usually stays near a permanent source of water, and it also forages in trees and in the water.1

It eats almost any animal it can overpower, including fish, crabs, small birds, rodents, insects and other monitors. It hunts by watching for movement, then chasing and overpowering its prey.1
