The Tuxtlan coral snake is a small venomous snake with bold red and black rings. It lives in eastern Mexico, in the state of Veracruz. Its bright colours warn that it is dangerous, so it is worth knowing how to recognise it.1

In the subspecies M. l. spilosomus, the black rings are reduced to black spots on the back. The spots are oval or round.1
