The rusty spider wasp is a reddish-brown wasp that hunts large spiders, mainly wolf spiders. It lives across a huge area of the Americas, from southern Canada to South America and the Caribbean. Females catch a spider, paralyse it and use it to feed their young.1

Females nest in dry, powdery soil, often under trees or buildings. Adults have been seen in gardens and in a cemetery in Syracuse, New York, where males perched on top of a monument.1

Adults feed on nectar and aphid honeydew from flowers. Females hunt large spiders, mainly wolf spiders, dragging them along the ground by the chelicerae or pedipalps, walking backwards. The larva then feeds on the live paralysed spider.1
