The Yucatecan cantil is a venomous pit viper. It lives only on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico and in northern Belize. Adults can grow longer than a metre, so it is one of the larger snakes in its region.1

Its preferred habitat is forest. In the north, it lives in low, dry deciduous scrub forest on thin soils over porous limestone, where surface water is scarce. In the south, it lives in tropical evergreen forest, sometimes with a dense understory of vines and shrubs.1
