Hutton's pit viper is a venomous snake that is very rare and little known. It belongs to the pit viper group and was first described in 1949 from just two young snakes. It is found only in the southern Western Ghats mountains of India, which makes it special to science.1

It was found at about 1,590 m on a plateau at the western edge of the Varushanad Hills. The area was once covered by dense tropical rainforest and is now partly covered by tea plantations.1

There is a series of small white spots on both sides of the body.1
A distinct red eye streak runs on both sides of the head.1
The underside is pale green, except the last 25 subcaudal scales (the scales under the tail), which are dull reddish brown.1
The colour and size of adult snakes are unknown.1

Despite long-term, targeted surveys of the Meghamalai Hills, it has never been seen there or anywhere else since 1949.1

The forest where it was found has partly been replaced by tea plantations.1
