The Mangshan pit viper is a venomous snake that lives only in the mountains of southern China. It is active at night and hunts by lying in wait for its prey. It is also a rare species, and its numbers are falling.1

The genus name Ermia was named after the Chinese herpetologist Zhao Ermi, but it was already used for a genus of locusts, so it was replaced by Zhaoermia.1
