The Middle American rattlesnake is a venomous pit viper that lives in Mexico and Central America. It is one of the largest rattlesnakes in its range, and its bites can cause severe damage to the skin and muscle around the wound.1

The body looks rough because the scales have raised keels, most noticeable on the rows along the sides.1
The head is blunt, which is one reason for its scientific name.1

Its bites are similar to rattlesnake bites in the United States. Only the venom of young snakes (neonates) contains crotoxin, a toxin that causes nerve symptoms.1
