The spotfin lionfish is a striped reef fish with long, frilly fins and venomous spines. It lives in warm Indian and Western Pacific Ocean waters, mostly on lagoon and seaward reefs. It is special because it hunts at night and hides in crevices during the day.1

While hiding, it faces inwards with its venomous spines pointing backwards.1

It is a nocturnal hunter, most active just after nightfall, and spends the day hiding in crevices and caves.1

Adults are usually solitary and defend a home range from other lionfish.1

Its main predators include sharks and the cornetfish Fistularia commersonii.1

Its small size and venomous spines make it of little interest to commercial fisheries, though it is caught in some subsistence fisheries.1
