Pairs of this fish are often seen with R. eschmeyeri, and it has been suggested that the two are the different sexes of one species.1

Its colour varies greatly. Newly introduced fish have been known to change colour when a group of a different colour is already present.1

It rarely swims. Instead, it moves along the bottom by propelling itself with its fins.1

It is a rare but highly desirable fish in the aquarium trade, and most specimens are exported to the west.1

It is difficult to identify in the wild, and it is extremely hard to wean captive fish onto prepared food.1
