The Albany adder is a small viper from the Cape Province of South Africa. It is extremely rare, and for a time it was thought to be extinct. Its rediscovery in 2016 and 2017 made it an important animal to protect.1

  • It has no horns over the eyes, unlike the typical form of the species, but it has prominent bumps above the eyes.1
  • Its colour is brown to reddish brown.1
  • It may not have the distinctive pattern seen on the typical form.1
  • It is small. Males reach a maximum recorded snout to vent length of 27 cm, and females 22.5 cm.1

Ñu ngi koy faral di jaxasoo ak: It was once treated as a subspecies of Bitis cornuta. The main difference is that it lacks the horns found on the typical form of that species, the nominate race B. c. cornuta.1
