The blue-winged wasp is a large, black-and-red wasp with wings that shine blue or violet. It lives across the eastern and central United States and into northern Mexico. Its young grow inside the bodies of beetle grubs that live underground.1

Xibaar
The young wasp develops inside the grub, pupating and overwintering in its body.1
Females dig into the ground to find beetle grubs, then sting the grub.1
After stinging the grub, the female often digs deeper to build a cell and lay an egg on it.1
Some research suggests that the Japanese beetle may also be a host for this wasp.1
