Small-scaled burrowing asp
The small-scaled burrowing asp is a black snake that lives underground in parts of West Africa. It is a venomous snake with long, hollow fangs, and scientists have studied it only a few times in the wild. It is interesting because it uses its fangs in an unusual way.1
Ni ngay ko xàmmee
- Black in colour, with a lighter, flatter belly than its back1
- Smooth body scales1
- Flattened head with a blunt snout, covered in plates rather than small scales1
- Short tail and a neck that is not well defined1
- Average length about 45 cm, with some reaching 75 cm1
Ñu ngi koy faral di jaxasoo ak: It is often confused with vipers (family Viperidae) because its long, hollow fangs look similar. Its head is covered in plates, while vipers have small scales on the head.1

Its venom is thick and slightly milky in appearance. It appears to be related to elapid venom rather than viper venom. In humans, the bite may first cause pain near the bite, followed by numbness and swelling in the same area.1
