Tropical fire ant
Dafay jamThe tropical fire ant is a small ant that builds mounds in open, sunny soil. It is native to the Americas, including the Caribbean, but has spread through much of the tropics with human transport. Its venom can cause severe allergic reactions, so it is important to know what it looks like and where it lives.1

The venom is a mix that includes the lipophilic alkaloid solenopsin, a fat-loving chemical and a major part of the venom. Its venom is comparable in power to that of the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). It can cause severe allergic reactions, especially anaphylactic shock, a sudden and dangerous whole-body allergic reaction.1

Xibaar
Colonies can spread by floating, and new queens can start colonies after a nuptial flight.1
Its worldwide range is even larger than that of the red imported fire ant, another invasive fire ant.1
It can interbreed with other closely related fire ant species.1
It is native to the Americas but has spread across the tropics, largely through human transport.1
Colonies can have a single queen (monogyne) or many reproductive queens (polygyne).1
