The red-legged purseweb spider is a large, strong-looking spider that lives in the southern and eastern United States. It builds a silk tunnel against a tree or other surface and waits inside for prey to land on it. Its long life, up to 7 years, is unusual for a spider.1

The body is solid and strong-looking, reddish-brown to black.1
Males have long red or red-orange legs from the femora downwards.1
Females have legs the same colour as the body.1
Females reach a body length of about 25 mm, just under an inch, including the chelicerae. Males are smaller, at about 15 mm.1
Like other mygalomorph spiders, the fangs point straight down rather than crossing.1
