The Australian spotted jellyfish is a jellyfish with a bell up to 50 cm wide. It is native to the western Pacific, from Australia to Japan, but has spread to many other seas. Its sting is mild and it is not considered a threat to people, but large groups can cause problems for fishing and local sea life.1

It feeds mainly on zooplankton, which it catches by filtering seawater. Fluid flows over clusters of tiny mouthlets near the base of its oral arm disk, and it must keep swimming to move food to the mouthlets for digestion.1

Its name comes from its spotted pattern, and it is also called the white-spotted or brown jellyfish.1
The bell can grow up to 50 cm across.1
It usually travels in large groups.1

The sting can be treated with a dilute acid, usually white or cider vinegar.1

Each jellyfish can filter as much as 50,000 litres of seawater per day.1

One individual found on Sunset Beach, North Carolina, in October 2007 measured 74 cm wide, perhaps the largest ever recorded.1

Large swarms can clog fishing nets, damage boat intakes and sometimes force fishing areas to close.1

Its polyps can multiply by dividing into other polyps, which makes a larger group than the one the mother started with.1
