The black rock scorpion is a dark brown or black scorpion that lives in eastern Australia. It makes its home in rocky places, digging burrows under rocks and logs. Its venom has a unique toxin that scientists are studying closely.1

Its venom contains a peptide toxin, a small protein-like molecule. It activates a pain-sensing receptor in nerve cells called TRPA1, causing sharp pain and greater sensitivity to pain. It does not cause inflammation, which is the swelling and redness caused by the body's immune response.1

Its sting can cause local pain and swelling in people.1
