The Central American coral snake is a highly venomous snake with bold red, yellow and black rings. It lives in forests from southern Mexico through Central America to north-western Colombia. It is mostly active at night and usually avoids people, but it can bite if it is handled or pinned.1

  • Red rings on the body are often broad, separated by narrow yellow-black-yellow bands1
  • Black snout1
  • A yellow or red band across the top of the head, depending on whether it has two or three colours1
  • Between 10 and 24 black rings on the body, plus 3 to 8 on the tail1
  • Smooth scales, a rounded head and a round pupil1
