It is a docile tarantula and is very reluctant to bite when distressed. Its main defence is flicking urticating hairs, which can irritate the skin.1

Trade in this species mostly involves captive-bred spiderlings, although wild tarantulas, including Brachypelma species, are still smuggled out of Mexico.1
