The Arabian fat-tailed scorpion is a venomous scorpion that can sting with very strong venom. It lives mainly in North Africa, the Middle East and south-western Asia, and it is one of the most feared scorpions in its range.1

It lives in the ruins of old, neglected buildings and in the edges of deserts in arid and semi-arid places. It also hides in piles of plant debris that have built up over time. In the Persian Gulf conflict it was considered a possible hazard for troops.1

Its venom is mainly made of neurotoxins, which attack the nerves, and cardiotoxins, which damage the heart. It may also contain myotoxins, which damage muscle. Local effects include intense pain, redness and swelling. Wider effects can include heart problems, internal bleeding, visual disturbance and breathing problems.1

It is extremely dangerous and its venom is considered among the most potent of any scorpion. Its sting is known to cause human death, mostly through breathing failure, heart failure or shock.1
