The beaked sea snake is a highly venomous sea snake. It lives in warm coastal waters across the Indo-Pacific, from the Persian Gulf to Southeast Asia. It is one of the snakes most often involved in sea snake bites, so it matters a lot to people who work or swim near the coast.1

  • Young snakes are olive or grey with black bands across the body, widest in the middle.1
  • The scale at the tip of the snout is longer than it is broad.1
  • Typical length is about 130 cm, with a tail of about 19 cm.1

This species is linked to more than 50% of all sea snake bites and to the majority of envenomings and deaths from sea snake bites; some estimates say up to 90% of all sea snake bites. The average venom yield per bite is about 7.9 to 9.0 mg, and the estimated lethal human dose is 1.5 mg. Some herpetologists describe it as aggressive.1
