The Desertas wolf spider is a large wolf spider that lives on one island in the Madeira archipelago. It is critically endangered, with fewer than 5,000 adults left. It is thought to be one of the largest wolf spiders in the world.1

It hides under rocks and in crevices on the volcanic island of Deserta Grande. Its habitat is being taken over by the grass Phalaris aquatica, and introduced goats and rabbits damage the native plants.1
