The northern death adder is a venomous snake that lives in northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. It hunts birds, frogs and small mammals, both by day and by night. Its venom can be deadly, so every bite needs urgent medical care.1

It contains neurotoxins that act before and after the nerve connection, which attack the nerves, and possibly substances that damage muscle and stop blood clotting. The main effects are local pain and flaccid paralysis, where the muscles go limp. Death can be caused by respiratory failure, when breathing stops.1
