Cómo reconocerlo

  • Its head is dark green, and the rest of its body is yellowish green.1
  • Males have a reddish-orange stripe along the side of the head and body, and a rusty red-orange tail. Females lack these markings.1
  • Juveniles are brightly coloured, and the males' head stripe is much more prominent.1
  • Adults reach about 36 to 41 cm long, with a triangular head that is clearly distinct from the neck.1

Se confunde a menudo con: It is often confused with the white-lipped pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris), the Trimeresurus septentrionalis and the Trimeresurus insularis. Salazar's pit viper has more teeth in its lower and upper jaw, a reddish-orange head stripe in males, and a smaller hemipenis (the male reproductive organ).1

Mantente a salvo

Datos

1

The house of Slytherin at Hogwarts is shown with a snake and linked to the colour green, which is why this snake was named after him.1

2

Two specimens of this species had been in the Natural History Museum of Denmark since they were collected by a Danish naturalist between 1811 and 1816. They had been wrongly labelled as white-lipped pit vipers.1

3

Pit vipers in the Trimeresurus genus look so alike that they are hard to tell apart in the field, so their true number may be higher than known.1

4

It was first found in 2019 during a reptile expedition to the Eastern Himalayas, and it was the fifth new reptile species found in Arunachal Pradesh that year.1

Cazamitos

Mito: The two museum specimens from Denmark were white-lipped pit vipers.

Verdad: They were Salazar's pit vipers, a new species. They had been wrongly labelled, and were only recognised as new after comparison and DNA analysis.1
