European garden spider
The European garden spider is a large orb-weaver that spins round webs. It is native to Europe and was introduced to North America. Its white markings form a clear cross on its back, which is why it is easy to spot in the right place.1

- Mottled white markings across the upper abdomen form a cross made of four or more segments.1
- Body colour ranges from extremely light yellow to very dark grey.1
- Adult females measure 6.5 to 20 mm in length. Males are smaller, at 5.5 to 13 mm.1
- Females hang head down in the centre of a round orb web, with one claw hooked to a signal line.1

The bite paralyses prey, which keeps the spider safe from being stung or bitten in return. Enzymes in the venom start to liquefy the prey's internal structures.1

When disturbed, it vibrates rapidly in its web until it becomes a blur, which is thought to confuse predators.1

Humpito
Females sometimes eat the male directly after mating.1
The cross-shaped markings are formed in cells filled with guanine, a by-product of protein metabolism.1
Spiders also prey on each other, but only just before, during or after mating. Their size, mating experience and hunger affect whether they attack.1
