Bag-shelter moth

Ochrogaster lunifer
À propos du nom : The caterpillars are called processionary caterpillars because they travel in single file, and bag-shelter because they live in silk bag nests.1

The bag-shelter moth is a moth whose caterpillars live together in silken bag nests and march in long lines. Its hairs can cause skin rashes, so it matters to anyone who lives in or visits mainland Australia.1

Caterpillars shelter during the day in silken bag nests on branches, high on trunks, or at the base of their food plant. They feed on acacia (wattle) trees and Grevillea striata (beefwood). In autumn, the mature caterpillars travel in long single-file processions to find places to pupate.1

Que mange-t-il ?
Caterpillars feed on the leaves of acacia (wattle) trees and Grevillea striata, mostly at night after the early stages. Adult moths do not feed, as their mouthparts do not work.1

Poils urticants

The hairs on the egg masses, caterpillars and adult moths can cause irritating skin rashes (dermatitis) in humans and other animals. Records also list osteomyelitis, eye inflammation (ophthalmia) and more severe allergic reactions. In horses, eating the caterpillars may cause pregnant mares to abort.1

Que fait-il quand il a peur ?

When disturbed, caterpillars curl up into a tight bunch, and their loose hairs can be carried away on the wind.1

Appelle toujours d'abord ton numéro d'urgence (112, 000, 911).

Faits

1

The final caterpillar stage carries more than two million urticating hairs (setae).1

2

A procession can contain a hundred or more caterpillars, each one holding onto the tail hairs of the one in front.1

3

Caterpillars follow silk trails left by others, and if two meet on each other's trails they can walk in a circle, sometimes forming a large circular mass.1

4

Females cover their eggs with scales from the tuft at the end of their abdomen to protect them from predators.1

5

The whole life cycle takes one year, and the caterpillars live together as a group from egg to pre-pupa.1
