California harvester ant
The California harvester ant is a species of ant that lives in the dry, sunny south-west of the United States and northern Mexico. It lives in large colonies, sometimes with thousands of ants, and it forages in the open during the day. It is also known as the ant used in Uncle Milton's Ant Farm.1

It stings, and its stings inject venom. The Chumash people of California traditionally swallowed these ants alive, and the venom from their stings caused hallucinations, which was used in coming-of-age ceremonies for boys.1

Eziokwu
Around 250 of these ants were considered an effective dose by the Chumash people when they were used in traditional ceremonies.1
This ant is the species used by Uncle Milton's Ant Farm, a popular toy that lets people watch ants dig tunnels.1
Colonies with several queens have been found to have higher average heat tolerance and less variation in heat tolerance, which gives them longer foraging times.1
Most colonies are started and run by a single queen, but some nests have several queens working together, a situation called pleometrosis.1
