The devil reef crab is a brightly patterned crab that lives on coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Hawaii. It is one of the most dangerous crabs in the world to eat, because its flesh and shell contain strong nerve poisons.1

This animal is poisonous, not venomous, so it harms people when eaten rather than through a bite or sting. Its shell and meat contain tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin, which are neurotoxins (poisons that attack the nerves). They are absorbed through the gut and interfere with the sodium channels in nerve cells.1

Poisoning from this crab can be fatal. In the Philippines, 50% of intoxication cases are reported to be fatal, and 12 people died on Negros Island in the 1980s. In Timor-Leste, one man died within hours of eating it, and in February 2021 two children in Cagayan died after eating crab their father had caught.1

Eziokwu

1

Both the shell and the meat contain dangerous neurotoxins, so the crab is not safe to eat in any part.1

2

Some specimens have been found to contain more than 3000 MU of saxitoxin per gram, a lethal amount for humans.1

3

The toxins are the same kind of compound that makes pufferfish poisonous.1

4
