The foxface rabbitfish is a vivid yellow reef fish with a black stripe running through its eye. It lives in lagoons and reefs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its fin spines hold venom, so it is one to watch carefully on the reef.1

  • Its main colour is vivid yellow, with white on the head and the front part of the body.1
  • A black band runs from the mouth, through the eye, to the start of the dorsal fin.1
  • A black area on the breast runs upwards, tapering, to just above the base of the pectoral fin.1
  • It has a compressed body, a steep head profile, a tubular snout and a weakly forked tail.1
  • Adults are usually seen alone or in pairs, often near branching Acropora corals.1

A na-agwakọkarị ya na: The blotched foxface (Siganus unimaculatus) can be confused with it. The blotched foxface has a large black spot below the soft-rayed part of the dorsal fin, which the foxface rabbitfish lacks.1

Its fin spines hold venom glands, so the venom is delivered through the spines. A study of a related rabbitfish found that its venom was similar to the venom of stonefishes.1
