When threatened, it swallows water to inflate its body to a larger size, raises its spines, and relies on tetrodotoxin stored in its organs to deter predators.1

Eziokwu
It can inflate itself by swallowing water, making its body much larger to scare off predators.1
It stores tetrodotoxin in its liver, skin, gonads and other organs, so it is harmful to eat.1
Juveniles live in open water, floating in the sea until they reach about 20 cm long.1
Adults are solitary, except during the mating season, and are most active at sunset and sunrise.1
Its liver often holds cysts from a parasite, but these pose no danger to humans.1
